Hi~
I know what you'll mean. I've been diagnosed with dyscalculia, with my spatial at 2%...
according to musicians you have high spatial skills to be able to play....
but the interesting thing is i picked uo the piano in four years; and that just totally stumps me. :-S
I find it very hard to co-ordinate anything, and can't really play by ear. I was wandering if anyone could give me any hints and tips as to how they do it...cheers

I guess that all depends on what type of dyslexia you do have. I play music semi professionally, several woodwind instruments and also bass guitar.
I find bass guitar easyer because it is a very visual instrument. You see, in my case I'm having difficulties to visualise mentally the spelling of words and how numbers look like. So the same applies for written music. I have a hard time memorising written music by heart, or memorysing written chord progressions - But I do understand the theory real well, I just am lacking a mental visual point of reference. So when playing bass for instance, it is easyer for me to "see" the music on the frett board than on the sheet music - So I memorise each finger position on the frett board rather than try to memoryse the written notes on the sheet music.

But that's me. Another person will have a different kind of trouble. It is up to you to analyse what are your specific difficulties and then find a way around to compensate.

I am an adult with Dyslexia/Dysgraphia- I have been addicted to music my whole life- I seem to see/hear almost the whole world around me in song, yet never really learned how to play an instrument all that well. I have found that computer based music uses a pattern and visual method for creating music that does not rely on notes and symbols that might cause us dyslexics to spin out of control.

Try programs like Kinetic or Project5 www.cakewalk.com

You can hook-up any midi keyboard to them.

These tools can open up a whole new world of possibilities with sound and they don't require you to master note reading or finger positions if you don't want to.

Would you please take my online survey on teaching music to students with dyslexia? (Copy and paste the link below.) The results of this survey will be used in a presentation I am preparing for a graduate course which I am currently taking. The survey will be open through Sunday, April 23, 2006.

Hi Perla, I am a music teacher and work in a local school. i am also dyslexic. i learnt to play the piano when I was four. i can remember it was easier to learn than the alphabet order or spelling. i find it easier to read music than reading a book. Some of the children i teach have learning difficulties. i use a colour noted system to teach them. the chidren respond really well to this. i hope this info will be helpful for you.

I have known I have as some kind of dyslexia for years now, and I have always been good at music, I was wondering if anyone would like to join me in making music. Lets see what some people of kind of the same mind set can come up with.
